The Senior Manager Material Stewardship Europe will report to the Director, Climate Energy and Technology for the EU responsibilities. And to the Global Director Material Stewardship for the Global responsibilities.  

 

Purpose of the job: 

The Senior Manager Material Stewardship Europe will contribute to the Material Stewardship program and team in Europe, with the objective to reach concrete results that ensure visibility and recognition of the ICA members operating in the EU and globally as contributors to the transition toward a circular economy. Influence policy making to embed members’ priorities into EU legislation dealing with waste, recycling, products, ESG reporting and due diligence. As a member of the EU Policy Group of ECI, S/He will take an active part in defining the advocacy strategy of ECI and in implementing it. 

As a member of the global Material Stewardship team, S/He will contribute to building expertise and executing EU/Global projects in this domain, and engaging members on Material Stewardship issues in the EU.  

 

Key responsibilities: 

The Senior Manager Material Stewardship Europe will: 

  • Monitor and influence the EU regulatory frameworks that relate to circular economy – e.g., waste, recycling, industrial by-products, and products – and the EU legislative acquis covering ESG reporting and due diligence – e.g., European Sustainability Reporting Standards (EFRAG), Corporate Sustainability, Due Diligence, Corporate Sustainability Reporting. 
  • Identify opportunities and threats that could affect ICA members and the Copper Mark – The leading assurance framework for responsible practices across the copper value chain.  
  • Communicate with and seek input from ICA members on identified opportunities and threats in the EU and in building technical and advocacies strategies.  
  • Prioritise identified threats and opportunities within the EU legislative landscape and define and implement related advocacy plans under the supervision of the EU Director. 
  • Prioritise these threats and opportunities as they relate to The Copper Mark and support The Copper Mark in their response to EU legislative obligations on ESG and due diligence under the supervision of the MS Global Director.  
  • Contribute to, and provide expertise on aspects of circular economy as they relate to the copper mining and metals sector, and participate in working groups on this topic with ICA’s partner organisations under the supervision of the MS Global Director.  
  • Develop positions in collaboration with MS Council members, and as needed, the Market Advocacy Team in the EU, broader MS team and value chain partners regarding circular economy, ESG reporting and due diligence concepts put forward by the EU Commission.  
  • Represent ICA in workshops, industrial forums, policy events and multi-metal organisations on these topics.  
  • Advocate the interests of the copper industry and contribute to positioning copper as a sustainable, responsibly sourced metal, thus as a solution to sustainable development.  

 

The position will have approximately 70% of the time allocated to Regulatory projects and dossiers (EU Responsibilities) and 30% of the time allocated to circular economy, ESG and due diligence projects and dossiers in relation to globally relevant issues and The Copper Mark (Global responsibilities).  

 

Desired profile and technical experience  

  • University degree in a relevant field of study. 
  • Relevant experience on material stewardship topics such as waste and recycling legislation, ESG reporting standards and due diligence related laws.  
  • A track record of effective advocacy towards the EU institutions.  
  • Experience in an EU Trade/Business association is an asset.  
  • Exposure to the metals sector is an advantage. 
  • Understanding of the EU reporting obligations of companies for due diligence and ESG compliance.  
  • Understanding of the EU legal acquis covering waste – management and recycling – and EU legislation on sustainable products.  
  • Understanding of the EU decision-making processes.  
  • Good understanding of industrial activities, including recycling. Understanding of mining is an advantage.  
  • Networking skills: ability to effectively engage with external stakeholders (policymakers, NGOs or other industrial sectors).  
  • Project management skills: task scheduling, budget build-up and monitoring, resource identification and allocation. Strong analytical skills including analysis of legislative texts or technical guidance.
